Dosage and Administration

Dosage should be tailored to the individual based on their condition, age, and weight. General dosing guidelines are:

  • Adults:
    • Starting dose: 10-15 mg/kg body weight per day, usually divided into two or three doses.
    • Maintenance dose: May be increased gradually based on the patients response and tolerance, up to a maximum of 60 mg/kg body weight per day.
  • Children:

  • Use the provided dosing device to measure the dose accurately.

Mechanism of Action

  • Sodium Valproate: Increases the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, which helps stabilize electrical activity and reduce seizure activity. It also has mood-stabilizing effects, making it useful in bipolar disorder.

  • Pregnancy: Sodium valproate is linked to an increased risk of birth defects. Use effective contraception and discuss with your healthcare provider.
  • Side Effects: Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dizziness, and tremors. Serious side effects can include liver toxicity, pancreatitis, and severe allergic reactions. Regular monitoring of liver function and blood counts may be required.
  • Interactions: Sodium valproate can interact with other medications, so inform your healthcare provider about all drugs you are taking.
