Tacrolimus ointment 0.1% w/w is an immunosuppressive medication used for the treatment of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (eczema). It works by suppressing the immune response in the skin, thereby reducing inflammation, itching, and redness.
Uses:
- Treatment of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and children aged 16 years and older who have not responded adequately to conventional treatments such as topical corticosteroids.
Application:
- Apply a thin layer of the ointment to the affected areas of the skin twice daily.
- Continue using the ointment until the affected skin is clear and then discontinue use.
- The ointment can be applied to any part of the body, including the face, neck, and folds of the skin.
- Hands should be washed after applying the ointment unless they are being treated.
Precautions:
- Do not use on infected skin unless the infection is being treated.
- Avoid exposure to natural or artificial sunlight (such as tanning beds) during treatment, as tacrolimus can increase the skins sensitivity to light.
- Use only as directed by a healthcare provider, and do not use for longer than prescribed.
- Not recommended for use in children under 16 years of age for the 0.1% strength; a 0.03% strength is available for younger children.
- Inform your healthcare provider of any other medical conditions, especially skin infections, weakened immune system, or a history of lymphoma or skin cancer.
- Consult with a healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Possible Side Effects:
- Burning or itching sensation at the application site.
- Skin redness or irritation.
- Increased sensitivity to temperature changes.
- Rarely, there may be an increased risk of skin infections or herpes simplex infections.
